Prizes

Decide on a plan for prize distribution throughout the Take Action! program. Determine a strategy for which items will be used. Prizes should be oriented toward a healthy lifestyle. Smaller prizes can be given to a wide number of participants, while larger prizes can be raffled off at the closing celebration.

Prizes may be obtained from a number of sources including those items that are purchased, supplied by the employer, or donated by local merchants. Examples include:

  • Drinks: Water bottles, Bottled water, 100% fruit juice, etc.
  • Clothing: Hats, T-Shirts, Sweat bands, etc.
  • Sports equipment: Pedometers, Jump ropes, Exercise balls, Yoga or exercise DVDs, etc.
  • Fruit or other healthy snacks such as small snack bags of vegetables (baby carrots, celery sticks, etc.).
  • Logo items such as coffee mugs or pens
  • Discounts for healthy food items in the cafeteria
  • Employees-donated prizes through favor coupons
  • Raffle tickets, certificates or recognition in the employee newsletter or on a bulletin board

Raffle tickets, certificates or recognition in the employee newsletter or on a bulletin board are inexpensive but meaningful options. Participants can be rewarded weekly in categories such as "Most Inspirational" or "Exceeded Weekly Points" or anytime with a sticker that certifies "I ate ________, a new fruit or vegetable for me," or "I tried ________, a new activity for me." Teams may be awarded for "Best Team Name," "Most Unique Team Activity," or "Most Participants Meeting Goal."

Local merchants with a philosophy of health, and a product base that aligns with the goals of Take Action!, can be solicited for donations, such as gift certificates, discount coupons, and merchandise. Be sure that sponsors are frequently and appreciatively acknowledged and are sent a thank you letter. Begin seeking prizes early in the planning process.
