Take Action!: Choose Fruits, Vegetables, and Physical Activity for a Productive Workforce

Take Action! is a free, flexible, 10-week employee wellness program that encourages fruit and vegetable consumption and regular physical activity among employees while fostering teamwork and boosting morale.

In addition to the health benefits individual employees gain from participating in the program, the results of Take Action! help businesses by improving job performance and morale, lowering absenteeism and turnover, reducing disability days, and lowering medical costs.

How does Take Action! Achieve these Goals?

The success of Take Action! is based on a nationwide employee physical activity program developed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and promoted by the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity and has been pilot tested at over 30 organizations nationwide. These organizations have a total employee base of over 60,000 people.

The program is structured to meet the needs of all people—from those who are just thinking about eating more fruits and vegetables and being more physically active to people who already consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and are physically active every day.

The program combines individual and group strategies that help people change their behavior. In addition, a Fruits and Vegetable component has been added to the Physical Activity focus of the original Take Action! program, and are identified throughout the Take Action! website with the Fruits and Vegetable Version and Physical Activity Version graphic icons.

Businesses of every shape and size indicate many ways in which their companies benefit when employees eat healthy foods and do regular physical activity. For more information about the benefits of the Take Action! program, see Benefits for Business (PDF, 108KB).

How Does An Employer Launch the Take Action! program?

  1. Top management support is secured for this 10-week program.
  2. A highly motivated leader is selected as the Program Coordinator.
  3. Planning Committee members and Team Captains are recruited. The Planning Committee and Team Captains then recruit 15 to 30 employee participants to a Team.
  4. Each participant sets a goal to make healthy lifestyle habits part of his/her daily routine over a 10-week period. Points toward these goals are earned either by eating fruits and vegetables or by being physically active.
